Medellín's most important church stands guard just east of
Parque Berrío. This was the first parish of Medellín. In 1649 it was built of wood and thatch. It was built in 1767 under a neoclassical architecture style. In 1970 Pope Paul VI gave this the title of Minor Basilica. In addition to priceless works of religious art, such as painting of the Virgin of Candelaria, you can see the silver altar and the organ of seven tons imported from Germany in 1850.
Thanks to the historical and architectural wealth of the colonial character basilica was designated a National Monument.
