The Capulin Campground and Snowplay area cross country ski trailhead is gated closed in the winter (to prevent vehicles from going on to the trail, which the rest of the year is part paved road and part off-road trail).
The cross country skiing trailhead is located at the north end of the paved campground. The ski trail crosses the Sandia Crest Scenic Byway near the Ellis trail.
The trail is open for cross country skiing when conditions allow, at the discretion of the US Forest Service.
