The A1 258 was originally the A1,the carriage was used on the Geraldton to Northampton line from 1876 til 1906 and is preserved on the ground floor of the Public Transport Authority Centre in East Perth.
The carriage was built in Birmingham, U.K. by the Metropolitan Railway Carriage and Wagon Co in 1875 at a cost of $760 (380 pounds). There are two second class and one first class compartments, the first class having padded and upholstered leather seats and second class wooden benches.
The coachwork is made of teak, while the inside and roof are of pine, french polished in first class and varnished red in second
The carriage is 4.9m long, 2.3m wide, 3.2m high and weighs 4.25 tonnes.
In 1912 the carriage was sent to Carnarvon for use on the jetty rail line, where it was used for the next 50 years, it was then acquired by the Gascoyne Historical Society , in 1989 ownership was transferred to Westrail where it was restored at the Midland Workshops to it's original condition
