[DE] Oberhalb von Geisenheim liegt am kleinen Elsterbach das Franziskanerkloster Marienthal. Die Gründungslegende besagt, dass ein erblindeter Jäger sich an ein Marienbild in einem stillen Waldtal erinnerte. Er versuchte den Weg in seinem Kopf zu rekonstruieren und schaffte es, das Marienbild zu erreichen, was er alsbald auch sehen konnte. Ein Wunder war geschehen und aus Dankbarkeit ließ der Jäger 1313 eine kleine Kapelle bauen, in die das Marienbild verbracht wurde.

Da sich in der Folge immer mehr Wunder ereigneten, wurde 1326-30 eine Wallfahrtskirche errichtet. Bis zur Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts kamen die Wallfahrten langsam ins Erliegen. Auf Initiative des aus Geisenheim stammenden Bischofs von Limburg wurde die Klosterkirche 1858 neu erbaut. Seit 1873 sind nun die Franziskaner in den neuen Gebäuden aktiv.

[EN]The Franciscan monastery Marienthal is located above Geisenheim near the small river Elster . The founding legend has it that a blind hunter remembered a picture of Mary in a quiet wooded valley. He tried to reconstruct the way in his head and managed to reach the image of Mary, which he soon also could see. A miracle had happened and gratitude let the hunter 1313 build a small chapel, in which the image of Mary was placed.

As more and more miracles occurred, in 1326-30 a pilgrimage church was built. By the mid-15th century the pilgrimages came slowly to a halt. On the initiative of the Bishop of Limburg (who came from Geisenheim), the church was rebuilt in 1858. Since 1873, the Franciscans are now active in the new buildings.
