I took Mary geocaching on Sunday August 13th. The location was the SE corner of Erie County Forest in Sardinia. The cache was the Genesee Road Geocache. I love this area. The significance it had for us, was it was the first place that we had hiked together. This area is very important to me. It is my favorite hike, and the place I run to when I need to get away from just about everything. I reconned this cache a few weeks ago to make this week's plans go more smoothly. I found the cache initially with little difficulty(this made it easier to feign difficulty later). With just a little looking around, it pretty much called out to me.

Mary was very tired today, and I do not think a day in the woods was what she had in mind. But she agreed to my plans to go hiking anyway. What a trooper. We started our hike and followed the GPS unit, trying to adjust for the times when it flaked out due to the thick canopy. I would consult it regularly so I could interpolate during the flaky intervals. Having a compass handy made this easier as well. There are several ways to get to this particular cache, and due to her not being in top form, I chose to follow the least strenuous. When we were close, there was another family already at the cache, which complicated things. They posted online that while they were there, they ran into some muggles. I corrected their mistake with a log entry of my own. We walked back along the trail a bit until we were out of their site and waited. Soon, they were walking toward us along the trail and I told Mary to stay put while I ran ahead to find the cache so she would not have to wander about off trail. I ran in circles for a while until I finally found the cache again. I quickly took the tackle box from its hiding place, put in a little wooden box(care to guess the contents?), put the box back into place, and called to her telling her to follow the trail and my voice. I told her she had to dig out the cache since it was her first, while I took out the trinkets we had intended to leave behind. She did not quite act according to plan. Instead of opening the box she walked around behind me and brought the cache next to me. I was trying so hard to hide a little sign and Precious Moments figure I brought with us. [a little back story here] When we were dating a few months, I asked her what our status was, and said I had half a mind to just hand her a piece of paper which read "Are you my girlfriend? Check yes or no". Not long thereafter, she found a figurine that pretty much depicted that scene, though one of a proposal. She finally opened the tackle box and I told her to start going through it looking for something to take. Then I handed her the little blue box and told her to check that out. She opened it, and saw the ring inside. She commented on how nice an item this was to leave in a cache. I put the figure on the cache, and showed her the sign. I cannot remember exactly what she said, but after what felt like an eternity, she finally caught on to what was going on, and asked something like "Are you serious?". Then I got up off my knee and hugged her, and she started crying, but in the good way. Luckily she said, then checked "Yes". Things I left behind: * Volkswagen Jetta matchbox car * An engagement ring * A girlfriend Things I took away: * A plastic toy camera * An intended(I hate the word fiance) Things Mary left behind: * A ceramic scale * A boyfriend Things she took away: * A pack of post it notes * An engagement ring * An intended(I hate the word fiance) We left the marycateandjimmy travel bug wrapped around the neck of what I think is a rubber hedgehog(I had to add the 'rubber' part in here because I asked a friend to proof this, and she thought I meant a real hedgehog). And nothing says love like a rubber hedgehog! The travel bug is a little dog tag like item that can be tracked online.
