This trompe-l'œil (deceive the eye) mural is a celebration of the art of Canadian icon Emily Carr (1871-1945). It's painted on the southwest wall of the Chemainus Theatre at 9737 Chemainus Road in Chemainus, British Columbia, Canada.

This anamorphic mural tricks the viewer into seeing a three-dimensional gallery - complete with steps and shadows - displaying five paintings by Emily Carr. The paintings, from left to right, are "Sombreness Sunlit", "Mountain Forest", "Logger's Culls", "Happiness", and "Red Cedar". The only truly three-dimensional items on the wall are the five lights at the top; everything else is painted on.
The mural measures 57 feet wide by 22 feet tall. It was painted by German trompe-l'œil artist Steffan Jünemann, with assistance from Anatolij Netkal, Carrie Kendall, Shannon McClelland, and Melody Pyefinch. More than 2000 hours of work went into the mural, and 2.5 km of tape were used to mask for shadows and special effects. As an example of the effort that was put into this work of art, every single leaf on the potted Arbutus tree is unique; no two are alike.
The mural was unveiled on October 15, 2008, though it wasn't yet complete due to weather and other delays. The mural was finally completed in April 2009.
