The bus station was built as part of a regeneration project and was partly built on the site of an old bus garage.
One end of the bus station is close to Liberation Square, built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Jersey at the end of World War II. The bus station takes its name from the square.
"It combines undercover waiting facilities, 11 stands inside – allowing you to board straight from the concourse, four outside stands, a café and The Customer Service and Information Centre. It is served by 20 different regular bus routes and a vintage tourist bus."

It was opened by Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway, the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey on 28th September 2007.

"The Lieutenant Governor of Jersey is the representative of the British monarch in the Bailiwick of Jersey, which is a Crown dependency of the British Crown.
The Lieutenant Governor has his own flag in Jersey, the Union Flag defaced with the Bailiwick's coat of arms. The Lieutenant Governor's official residence (Government House) in St. Saviour was depicted on the Jersey £50 note 1989–2010.
His duties are primarily diplomatic and ceremonial. The role of the Lieutenant Governor is to act as the de facto head of state in Jersey. The Lieutenant Governor also liaises between the Governments of Jersey and the United Kingdom. The holder of this office is also ex officio a member of the States of Jersey but may not vote and, by convention, speaks in the Chamber only on appointment and on departure from post.
The Lieutenant Governor exercises certain executive functions relating broadly to citizenship (passports, deportation and nationality). Jersey passports are British passports issued on behalf of the Lieutenant Governor, in the exercise of the royal prerogative, through the Passport Office which the States fund and from which the States retain any revenue generated. Deportation from Jersey is ordered by the Lieutenant Governor. Certificates of naturalisation as a British citizen are issued by the Lieutenant Governor."

"Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Peter Ridgway KBE CB (born 1950) was appointed to the role of Lieutenant Governor for a 5-year term on 14 June 2006 after a long military career.
He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and wascommissioned into the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment in 1970. He rose within the army to be the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
He was appointed CBE in 1995 and CB in 2001, as well as receiving the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service and the US Defense Intelligence Agency Award in 2005. Ridgway was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2011."
