Die Südschwimmhalle wurde bereits in der DDR-Zeit als Volksschwimmhalle errichtet. Die Schwimmhalle sollte eigentlich nur dem Volk der Stadt Dessau zur Verfügung stehen, weshalb der Planer die Becken nur auf eine Länge von 24,5 meter ausgelegt hat und damit für Wettkämpfe nicht zulässig ist.
Aus finanziellen Gründen, wurden die Sanierungsarbeiten seit den 2000er Jahren immer weiter nach hinten geschoben. Bis die Stadt letztendlich den Bau einer neuen Schwimmhalle beschlossen hat. Somit neigt sich die Ära dieser Halle langsam dem Ende entgegen.
