The circular synagogue, built in 1859, with its strange neo-Gothic towers, once served one of the oldest Jewish communities in Hungary, but now sits abandoned and in decay.

The population of Jewish residents was nearly 100 in the 1850s after they settled down in the free royal town, during the reign of Joseph II and after 1840.
Consequently, it was possible for them to hold their common services in the town. As the building exceeded the community’s financial resources, the synagogue was built from a donation by Koszeg-born wholesaler Fülöp Schey, who lived in Vienna. The building was dedicated to the congregation in December, 1859. The round, two-towered, uplit building with a dome assured seats for 100 men and 100 women on the gallery standing on iron columns.
There were plans to use the two front buildings as a religious school and quarters for the teachers, respectively. Since 1944 it has been decaying and due to the lack of a Jewish population in town, it is not currently in use.
The terrain with synagogue is closed and inaccessible.
