This 20 sucre stamp from 1986 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the mapping of the Equator.
The Equator was discovered and mapped out in 1736 by a French geodesic expedition team led by Charles-Marie de La Comdamine. Even though those early geographers were about 250 meters off the mark, it was an extraordinary feat at the time.
Due to the misguided efforts of the French, the 30 metre monument that is the focal point of the Mitad del Mundo Square, complete with a painted line to indicate the equator, is basically a false equator indicator. But don't tell your friends - it's fun to have one foot in the southern hemisphere and one foot in the northern hemisphere!
