"Neste local o capitão do donatário João Vaz Corte Real fez erguer a primeira fortificação da antiga Angra, o chamado Castelo dos Moinhos, cerca de 1474. Esta fortificação, longe do mar, traduzia uma concepção tardo-medieval, europeia e mediterrânica, de defesa em acrópole.
O obelisco actual foi erigido no século XIX em homenagem à passagem de Pedro IV de Portugal pela Terceira, no contexto da Guerra Civil Portuguesa (1828-1834).".
"Here the captain of the donee João Vaz Corte Real erected the first fortification of the old Angra, called the Castle Mills about 1474. This fortification, far from the sea, represented a late-medieval conception of defense for European and Mediterranean acropolis.
The present obelisk was erected in the nineteenth century in honor of the passing of Pedro IV of Portugal by Terceira, in the context of the Portuguese Civil War (1828-1834)."
