This really is a spectacular climb. It actually continues beyond the monastery until you reach the Path of the Gods, one of the most spectacular hikes in Italy.
Advice that you'll find on some websites is "to consider the fatigue of the steps as a cathartic preparation for the mystical experience on the top of Campo Valley."
