Dating back to the 7th century, the Convento di S. Francesco (St. Francis of Assisi) is made up of three elements: the church, the monastery and the famous cloister.
The monastery was founded in the VII century and given to Franciscan monks in the XIV century.
The baroque church has many important artifacts including a wooden main door of the 1500s, two frescoes from the 700s portraying Sant’Antonio of Padova and San Giacomo, which returned to light during a restoration work in 1926, and a splendid wooden statue of San Francesco with Christ Crucified. In 1992, on the outside of the Church, a bronze statue representing San Francesco was placed.
The cloister is a marvelous mix of many architectural styles, from the pagan era to the Middle Ages, and is a peaceful place to visit. During the summer, the cloister hosts art exhibitions and the Sorrentine Musical Summer.
