This book is at the entrance to a lava tube that the US Forest Service allows you to enter. It is there to make sure everyone gets out.

The register is in a well maintained box. The entrance to the cave is well marked by a rock wall. Anyone entering is asked to log an entry so that the rescue people know you're in there when you don't make it back out.
If you go in the cave be prepared for cold (usually near freezing even in the summer) and pitch black. The hikable length of the tube is about 3/4 mile one way.
To reach this log book you'll need to travel a couple of miles along a dirt road and a short 5 min hike from the parking area.
