Die Geschichte des Klinikums reicht bis in das Jahr 1228 zurück. In diesem Jahr wurde es innerhalb der Stadtmauern in einer Urkunde erwähnt. Über die Jahre, hatte das Krankenhaus Grundstücke dazu gekauft und wieder verkauft. Diesen Standort hat es erst nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg als "Bezirkskrankenhaus" bezogen. Zuvor war hier die Fliegerschule untergebracht. Als die DDR wieder ein Teil der BRD wurde, begann auch die Modernisierung des Klinikums. Hierfür wurde ein Ersatzneubau geplant, der in mehreren Bauabschnitten fertiggestellt wurde.

Der Grundstein für den ersten Bauabschnitt wurde bereits im Mai 1994 gelegt. Am 01.08.1996 ging dieser Bauabschnitt mit 160 Betten und einem Augen-OP in Betrieb. Im fünften und letzten Bauabschnitt wurde am 16.09.2011 die Arbeit aufgenommen. Mit diesem Abschnitt ist das Klinikum eines der wenigen Krankenhäuser in Deutschland, die eine Hotelstation haben. Heute zählt das Städtische Klinikum in Dessau somit zu den renommiertesten und modernsten Kliniken der BRD.

In the fifth and final phase of construction work began on 16/09/2011. This section is the hospital one of the few hospitals in Germany that have a Hotel Station. Today, therefore, the Municipal Hospital in Dessau is one of the most prestigious and most modern hospitals in the GDR.
