The Peak Tram is a Funicular railway that was created in 1888. In 1873 the population of Hong Kong had reached over 173,000 people of which 30-40 families called The Peak home. In order to service the population growth the Hong Kong High Level Tramways Company was born and the first service connected 5 stations to the Peak height differnce of just under 400m (1,312ft).
The Peak Tram was originally operated by coal fired steam boilers serving 150,000 passengers in it's first year. A 72 seat lightweight metal tram was introduced in 1959 before a HK$60million overhaul upgrade to a micro-processer-controlled electric drive system in 1989. This being its current form.
The Peak Tram is a double reversible funicular system running on its original track. It is a single track route and a passing loop. The lower terminus is on Garden Road. The upper terminus is Victoria Peak. there are 4 request stops in between Kennedy Rd, MacDonnell Rd, May Rd and Barker Road.
Today over 4 million people take the approx min journey to take advantage of the amazing views of Hong Kong harbour, mainland and island. These views being even more spectaculiar at night.
A return ticket for adults is HK$40 (Approx AUS$5.50 or US$5.14) and children is HK$18 (as at May 14). It operates 7AM to Midnight 7 days a week all year round.
