The Old Church in Romanshorn is more than 1,230 years old. Built in 719 by Waltram, the tribune of the Arbongaus. Originally the building was the monastery of St. Gall.
After the Reformation, both denominations used to the church until 1911. During this time, enlargements and renovations of the church were always necessary because of the increase in population.
Once the New church of St John was completed in 1913 both denominations had their newly built houses of worship, it was once quiet around the Old Church.
During excavations in the 1960's foundations of older churches, valuable fragments of frescoes and a former window were found. In both parishes a renovation loan was approved in 1967.
Two years later, the official opening of the restored and now listed church took place on 5 December 1969.
Since then, the old church is used by both denominations. Through the thorough restoration of 1969, the Old Church is again awakened to a versatile new life and become a valuable link in the ecclesiastical and cultural life of the community.
