Not a big climb, but a big pile of volcanic ash.

This is not much of a climb; it is only 0.5 mile to the top. But nevertheless, the climb is very steep and strenuous and takes about 30 minutes. From the top of this old spatter cone, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding moon-like landscape, where the highlights include The Great Rift, the Snake River Plain, and the Pioneer Mountains.

This giant pile of volcanic ash is located in the center of Craters of the Moon National Monument - the largest lava field in the continental USA. And that is all you can see from the top: Lava fields all the way to the horizon!
