Visitors to the Lakes District Trail will experience a lakeside view the entire way. The trail is paved for nearly its first half, passing an observation pier, then turns south and enters a woodland bottom near a cypress lake and the trail is crushed asphalt and dirt. Halfway along there is a wooden footbridge. The trail exits the woods and continues paved as before. There is another observation pier near the end of the trail.

Many varied specimens of flora may be seen, including the Bald Cypress, the Southern Magnolia, Red Maple, Ginkgo, Pin Oaks, Water Oaks, Persimmon, Hackberry, Cottonwood, Pecan, Juniper, Willow, Tallow, and Box Elder.

In addition, the lake is home to box turtles and snakes, and stocks of fish. Along the trail you may encounter raccoons, armadillos, and birds of prey and song birds.
