The depicted Renaissance bastion with part of city wall is the only relatively preserved part of large historic fortification system of town Nový Jicín.
The depicted bastion (so called "Parish Bastion / Farská bašta") is the last constructed part of massive fortification system, which construction began around 1380. The city wall, in some parts almost 7 meters high and 180-200 cm wide, was built from sandstone blocks. A total of three bastions were constructed on the eastern side of the town along the water moat. Only one of them has survived to this day, in the open southeast corner of the fortification. This hexagonal Renaissance bastion, built in 1613, is equipped by rectangular openings, grilles, and keyhole embrasures. The Parish Bastion became a major defensive element, when the battle between the armies of Jan Jirí Krnovský (Protestant side) and the Neapolitan soldiers in the service of the Spanish King (Catholic side), took place at Nový Jicín in 1621 during Thirty Years War.
The majority of city' fortification, including gates, was demolished after 1840.
