This plaque is located at a 1960s building with stores and offices in the center of Basel. It reminds the location as the first residence of an American diplomat in Switzerland. It was a different building then, of course, but major parts of the front of the old building were relocated and re-established in another street in 1964.
The inscription says:
"1830-1961
On April 30, 1830, Consul General John G. Boker
of New York received his commission
from President Andrew Jackson as the first
American diplomatic representative to
Switzerland and established his residence
on this site in the building known
as "zum goldenen Löwen". Carl Ryhner
of Basel was delegated Vice Consul.
Gift of the American Women's Club in Basel. April 30, 1961"
FIRST - Classification Variable: Person or Group
