Hoa Lon prison was built by the French in the late 19th Century and used to keep many of the US pilots captured during the Vietnam War. Its name "Hanoi Hilton" was given by the Americans in a sarcastic way.

In this prison the French proceeded with a number of executions, mainly by "guillotine". It was the largest of the French prisons in their colony and it was called "Maison Centrale". Apparently a village was razed for the prison to be built on the location.

After the end of Vietnam War, from 1975, the prison was used to jail opponents to the regime. And it was continuously used until 1990, when the government decided to make some money out of this prime real estate property located in central Hanoi. The grounds were sold, the prison was mostly razed to give place to a skyscraper, but a little part of the prison was kept as a museum. A good museum, by the way, with interesting concepts and a nice collection. Recommendable visit to any traveler going to Hanoi.
