The Mahakan octagonal fort was built by king Rama I in the late 18th Century. It was intended to defend the city as part of a wider plan and it actually had an important role in the battle for Bangkok when the Burmese attacked and sieged the city in 1785.
It's located in a central area of the city, not far from the Democracy monument, from the City Hall, from the Golden Mount. And it's right in the center of the area where heavy demonstrations against the Government are taking place (2013-2014).
