As you pass through the gateway to Foulridge Wharf it would appear that your car has to obey the speed limit that applies to boats on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal.

The Leeds - Liverpool Canal is the longest canal in Northern England at 127 miles. Foulridge Wharf is situated at the highest point on the canal close to a mile long summit canal.

When the canal was built, this was a very busy wharf where limestone was unloaded and burnt in a nearby lime kiln.

No longer a working canal, it is still popular with leisure boaters, who can moor here. For people without their own boats, it also possible to hire one here or simply go on a short pleasure cruise.

A nearby sign on the wharf tells us about the 4 MPH speed limit for boats on the canal, the obvious inspiration for the limit imposed on cars.
