We admit it - this is not a real geographical center. But the road through Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is special in two ways:
1. It crosses the line half way between the equator and the North Pole.
2. It closely follows the Great Continental Divide, meaning the water on one side of the road eventually floats into the Atlantic Ocean (through Yellowstone River, Missouri, Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico) and the water on the other side of the road finds its way into the Pacific Ocean (through Snake River and Columbia River).
Thus, with half of the northern hemisphere’s land to the south and half of it to the north and with half of the northern hemisphere’s water to the west and the other half to the east, we would like to pronounce this place the
Center of the Northern Hemispere.
Please note that the sign is not precisely at this location. It was half a mile off when we visited it and has recently been moved again (see this article in USA Today.
