In 1976 beslisten de Steenbakkerijen van Ploegsteert om de ontgonnen terreinen te beheren als moerasgebied. De vzw ‘Réserve naturelle et ornithologique de Ploegsteert’ werd opgericht. Op vandaag beslaat het natuurreservaat zo'n 150 ha en biedt het onderdak aan 220 verschillende vogelsoorten.
Aangepaste beheerswerken houden het water kunstmatig ondiep. Dit moerasgebied bevordert de ontwikkeling van planten en ongewervelden, waar ook ontelbare vogels op af komen. Daarnaast doen we aan 'bosbeheer', om te vermijden dat enkele agressieve planten- en bomensoorten de volledige zone zouden overwoekeren.
Een volgend project voorziet in het aanleggen van waddeneilandjes, waardoor we ook steltenlopers kunnen aantrekken. Tegen 2020 wensen we op die manier een natuurreservaat van 175 ha te beheren.
