Auf dem Römerberg, vor der historisch wiederaufgebauten Ostzeile, befindet sich die in den Boden eingelassene "Bücherverbrennung-Gedenkplatte" (2001) aus Bronze, ein Werk des Bildhauers Willi Schmidt (1924 - 2011).
Auf der Tafel lodern in stilisierter Form Flammen, sie umfassen im oberen Abschnitt drei aufgeschlagene Bücher. In mahnender Erinnerung an den Tag der reichsweiten Bücherverbrennung der Nazis wurde hier 68 Jahre später am 10.05.2001 diese Gedenktafel enthüllt. Ihr Durchmesser beträgt 1,50 Meter.

At the Römerberg, in front of the historically reconstructed Ostzeile, is, embedded into the ground the "book burning memorial plate" (2001) made of bronze, a work of sculptor Willi Schmidt (1924 - 2011).
On the plate are blaze flames in a stylized form, comprising three open books in the upper section. In admonishing reminder of the day of the Reichs-wide book burning by the Nazis, this plaque was unveiled here 68 years later on 10.05.2001. Their diameter is 1.50 meters.
The (translated) surrounding text (a quote by Heinich Heine) is:
THIS WAS JUST A PRELUDE, WHERE THEY HAVE BURNED BOOKS, THEY WILL END IN BURNING HUMAN BEINGS.
