Das Staatliche Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe geht auf die markgräflich-badischen Sammlungen von Kuriositäten und Naturalien zurück. Durch die Interessen und das Engagement von Markgräfin Caroline Luise von Baden wurden sie zwischen 1752 und 1783 zu einer bedeutenden wissenschaftlichen Sammlung ausgeweitet. 1784 wurde das Naturalienkabinett in die Räume der Hofbibliothek verlagert und 1785 erstmals als Museum für die Bürger geöffnet. Die Sammlungen des heutigen Naturkundemuseums sind damit seit über 200 Jahren für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich!
Zwischen 1866 und 1872 wurde das heutige Gebäude am Friedrichsplatz für das Naturalienkabinett und die Hofbibliothek errichtet. Im Jahre 1942 wurde das Haus durch Bomben zerstört und große Teile der wertvollen Sammlungen gingen verloren. Der Wiederaufbau konnte 1972 abgeschlossen werden. Heute gehört das Naturkundemuseum Karlsruhe wieder zu den größten Einrichtungen seiner Art in Deutschland.

The State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe goes back to the Margrave of Baden-collections of curiosities and natural history. Due to the interests and commitment of Margravine Caroline Luise of Baden, they were extended 1752-1783 to an important scientific collection. 1784, the natural history collection was relocated to the premises of the Court Library in 1785 and first opened as a museum for the citizens. The collections of the Natural History Museum today are therefore accessible to the public for over 200 years!
Between 1866 and 1872, the current building was erected at the Friedrich accommodate the natural history cabinet and the court library. In 1942 the house was destroyed by bombs and much of the valuable collections were lost. The reconstruction was completed in 1972. Today, the Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe is once again one of the largest facilities of its kind in Germany.
