As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the discovery of the caves, the square was designated Plaza de los Descubridores and a sculpture was commissioned to honour the five local young men who first found the caves on the 12 January 1959. They were Francisco Navas Montesinos, Manuel Muñoz Zorrilla, Miguel Muñoz Zorrilla, José Luis Barbero de Miguel and José Torres Cárdenas from the close village of Maro.
The monument depicts 5 young men (one of them stands at the back of the monument) climbing a rock.
