This is a place with obvious tactical importance, located on the top of a hill across the river, from where the city of Porto can be easily targeted. It's no surprise therefore that it had a role in the two single occasions when war happened withing the Portuguese territory, both in early 19th Century: the Peninsular War and the short Civil Portuguese War.

In this location was first based the Regimento de Artilharia do Porto, renamed to Regimento de Artilharia nr 4, created in 1806 and terminated in 1829. The current Regimento de Artilharia nr 6 was created in 1889, originally based in the town of Penafiel, not so far from Porto, aand finally moved to this base in 1911.

In 1926 it takes its current name, changing names again in the next year to Regimento de Artilharia Ligeira n.º 5 (RAL5) when it was moved once more to Penafiel until it was also terminated in 1975.

Meanwhile, in 1939 it was created the Regimento de Artilharia Pesada n.º 2 (RAP2) which, in 1975, receives the equipment coming from Penafiel and gets the name Regimento de Artilharia da Serra do Pilar (RASP)". In 1993 the current name was established: Regimento de Artilharia n.º 5"
Era: Pre-Napoleonic
