"The origin of the Methodist Church in Portugal resulted from the testimony of two Englishmen, Thomas Chegwin in 1854, and James Cassels, ten years later. Both were responsible for the initiation of small groups in the bible study and prayer, adopting the model created by John Wesley in its class system.
In 1868 was built the first Methodist chapel in Vila Nova de Gaia, where they celebrated the first infant baptisms and worship of Holy Communion. The growth of Methodism, under the leadership of Cassels became evident and repeated calls were made ??to the Methodist Missionary Society, London, requesting that a missionary to guide this work. The request was eventually granted, and a young minister, Robert Hawkey Moreton, was sent in 1871."

Em 1868 foi construída a primeira capela Metodista em Vila Nova de Gaia, onde se celebraram os primeiros baptismos infantis e cultos de Sagrada Comunhão.
