This sculpture is set in front of the National Theatre of Costa Rica.
This life-sized or perhaps slightly smaller than life-sized sculpture depicts Calderon de la Barca with long hair, a mustache and goatee. He stands wearing a long cape while holding a large book to his waist with his right hand. It set atop a 3 foot plinth in a little nook of the National Theatre- not far from the entrance. It would appear to be made of marble. Unfortunately there is no sign at the site indicating the artist or date.

During certain periods of his life he was also a soldier and a Roman Catholic priest. Born when the Spanish Golden Age theatre was being defined by Lope de Vega, he developed it further, his work being regarded as the culmination of the Spanish Baroque theatre. As such, he is regarded as one of Spain's foremost dramatists and one of the finest playwrights of world literature..."
