The Antonio Gandusio Theater was created by a mayor of Rovinj, Nicolo de Califfi. He draw the blueprints of the theater himself, with special emphasis on detail and a general baroque style.
The theater was named after one of the greatest Italian theater and film comedians pioneers, born in Rovinj in 1873. By then Istria was part of Italy and it remained like that until the end of the Second World War.
