The extensive cemetary cover large parts of the eastern end of the peninsula, is laid out so that almost every grave can have a seaview, relating to Mahdia's long history of piracy, fishing and sailors.
It starts in front of the Borj el-Kebir and continues all the way past the Fatimid port, ending next to the lighthouse.
At its eastern end lies the Zaouia of Sidi Jabeur.

Surrounding the Borj el Kebir, Mahdia's cemetery would certainly be a stunning place to decompose. In summer, it may seem a bit hot and dusty, but in springtime the white gravestones contrast with lush green grass and bright yellow dandelions, with an azure sea as a backdrop. Judging by the empty drinks cans and the sheep droppings, it is a favourite location for both picnics and grazing.

And question of number of graves? Due to large are, not so planned way of building of graves and huge mess all around it could be 1000 of them or thousands. Who knows :)
