Negage was one of the biggest Air Force bases during the 14 years of was in Angola (1961-1975), after the main base in Luanda. It was built in the first years of 60's and when the insurrection started, in 1961, it was intensively used although the base itself wasn't ready for operations. Pilots would use a parallel runway, improvised by the military engineers, and sleep in tents. Shortly after, it became a full operational base, active until the Summer of 1975, Portuguese Airforce had a permanent force of North-American Harvard T6 and Dornier 27 based there. Eventually, it was used by aircraft based in Luanda.

After the independence the newly created Angolan Air Force used the facilities until they became... well... non-operational. Until recently it was still an Air Force facility although not operating "flying machines".
