A sign on Puerto Vallarta's malecon (sea walk) informs us:

"Pirate Ships

The port was integrated into
the Bay in the 16th and 17th
centuries. Many Spanish ships
anchored off the coast toload
freshwater and allowthe crew
to rest and relax near the
rivers. This was also a time of
pirates. The most important
treasure was on the Galeon de
Manila (a sjip that transported
spices, porcelain, ivory,
laquer, fine fabrics and orien-
tal crafts to be sold in Europe),
which was looted by the
famous English pirate Thomas
Cavendish, who also attacked
the village of Pontoque, a
nearby town in the Bay. The
most important incident with
pirates in the bay was the de-
tention of the English privateer
John Clipperton in 1714, near
an estuary of the Ameca River.
French smugglers who arrived
on the coast to unloand and
trade illegal merchandise with
the local people also used the
harbor."
