The big aviation meeting Niort Sunday
May 10, 1931 , promises to be an event without
precedent. Organized by the Aero Club of Deux-Sèvres
and Poirier brothers , airmen and contractors
air shows, the event comes to close the
ninth state fair . A 1931 edition placed
under the sign of the wings. For a week, this
festival was indeed an opportunity to discover
the joys of baptism air for many spectators

Il y a tout juste 80 ans, le 10 mai 1931, Raymond
Villechanoux, chef pilote chez Blériot, trouvait la
mort lors d’un meeting organisé à l’aérodrome de
Niort-Souché. L’année suivante, un monument
est inauguré sur place en guise d’hommage. Bien
que l’édifice existe toujours, cette page de l’histoire
aéronautique niortaise est passée aux oubliettes...
Le grand meeting d’aviation de Niort du dimanche
10 mai 1931, s’annonce comme un événement sans
précédent. Organisée par l’aéro-club des Deux-Sèvres
et les frères Poirier, aviateurs et entrepreneurs de
spectacles aériens, la manifestation vient clore la
neuvième foire exposition. Une édition 1931 placée
sous le signe des ailes. Pendant une semaine, cette
fête populaire a en effet été l’occasion de découvrir
les joies du baptême l’air pour de nombreux specta-
teurs. La veille du meeting, entre deux films projetés
au cinéma Familia Palace, les frères Poirier présentent
au public les aviateurs qui doivent s’exhiber le lende-
main. La tête d’affiche de cette manifestation aéro-
nautique n’est autre que Raymond Villechanoux.
