Færøerne er en delvis selvstyrende del af det Danske Rigsfællesskab ifølge Lov om Færøernes Hjemmestyre fra 1948 og udøver det parlamentariske selvstyre i et af verdens ældste parlamenter, Lagtinget. Øerne vælger to repræsentanter til det danske Folketing, og de har valgt ikke at være medlem af EU. Administrativt er øerne opdelt i 6 sysler og 30 kommuner.

Faroe Islands is a semi-autonomous part of the Danish Kingdom and ruled under the Home Rule Act of 1948. The Parliamentary self-government is carried out in one of the world's oldest parliaments, Lavtinget. The islands select two representatives to the Danish Parliament (Folketinget in Copenhagen), and they have chosen not to join the EU. Administratively, the islands are divided into 6 shires and 30 municipalities.

(da) Thorshavn (færøsk: Tórshavn), blandt færinger mere populært kaldt Havn eller Havnar, er hovedstaden på Færøerne og ligger på østkysten af disses største ø, Streymoy. Byen er med sine 19.759 indbyggere (JAN 2013) Færøernes største kommune og desuden landets kulturelle, økonomiske og trafikale centrum. Selv om øerne ligger spredt er infrastrukturen med bl.a. offentlig transport stærkt udbygget. Bl.a. er det gratis at anvende bybusserne i Torshavn.
Byen blev grundlagt som handelsplads under den danske kong Frederik 2 og kilder nævner første gang faste bebyggelser i Tórshavn i 1539. Stedet har dog været kendt meget tidligere, idet det var her føringerne for mere end 1.000 år siden holdt de første Alting, og området omkring Tinganes er stadig den dag i dag centrum i den Færøske regerings virke.
Byens navn betyder Thors havn opkaldt efter guden for torden og lynild i nordisk mytologi og det nordiske ord for havn. Byvåbenet viser Thors hammer, Mjølner, hvilket viser, at Tórshavn kan dateres tilbage til tiden før kristendommen.
Byrådets nuværende bygning, der er på ca. 350 m2, er opført af færøsk basalt i 1894. Den rummede Tórshavns Kommuneskole indtil 1955, hvorefter den midt i 70'erne blev restaureret og indrettet til rådhus.

(en) Torshavn (Faroe Islands: Tórshavn), among Faroese more popularly known as Havn or Havnar, is the capital of the Faroe Islands and is located on the east coast of their largest island, Streymoy. The city ara with its 19,759 inhabitants (JAN 2013) Faroe largest municipality and also the cultural, economic and traffic center. Although the islands are scattered, the infrastructure including public transportation ara greatly expanded. Among other things, it is free to use buses in Torshavn.
The city was established as a trading center under the Danish King Frederik 2 and sources mention the first permanent settlements in Tórshavn in 1539th. However, the place has been known much earlier, as it was here for more than 1,000 years ago the Faroese people held the first Alting, and the area around Tinganes is still today the center of the Faroese government work.
The city's name means Thor's harbor named after the god of thunder and lightning in Nordic mythology and the Nordic word for harbor. The city coat of arms shows Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, which shows that Tórshavn dates back to the time before Christianity.
The City Council present building, which is approx. 350 m2, was built using Faroese basalt in 1894. It contained Tórshavn Municipality School until 1955, after which it in the mid 70s was restored and converted into the town hall.
