Gyanyin is revered in eastern Asia as a protective, kind and caring female figure, both by Buddhists, who perceive her to be an enlightened one—a bodhisattva, and by Hindus, who perceive her to be a Hindu deity. While Guanyin is revered by all, it has been my experience that she enjoys a larger role in the devotions of women than men. Pregnant women, older women, and women generally in need, turn to Guanyin for aid and assistance—the "Goddess of Mercy".

In Muslim Indonesia, the Goddess is not as visible as in other locales, however, there is a statue of her in the Eng An Kiong Buddhist Temple ("the old Chinese Temple"), located on the southern side of the city of Malang. She is depicted standing, life-sized (or at least human life-sized) and moving towards a man, who is sits on a water buffalo and plays a flute.

I would not normally waymark such a modest Goddess statue, but they are few and far between in East Java, also, there is a story to the man and Goddess. I did enquire as to the story from a priest, but, while I could ascertain that there was indeed a story, our shared language skills negated any attempt by myself to elicit the details of this story.

The Temple is on the Malang tourist circuit, easy to find. Entry is free, though a donation is the thing to do. While there, you can have your fortune told.
