Chairil Anwar (1922-49) was an Indonesian poet. His work covered the themes of death, individualism, and existentialism, and aided the development of the Indonesian language. His life and works generated a certain amount of controversy. The occupying Japanese criticised his works, as did later some Indonesians, who considered his oeuvre to be too pro-western. He is still remembered fondly in Indonesia.

The life-sized bust depicts a somewhat young man (fair enough, he did die young), wearing an open suit. The poet gazes towards the local tourist office, on a busy intersection, in the city of Malang. Reaching the statue involves a bit of leg work, negotiating the aforesaid traffic.
