Malang is second largest city in east Java, with a population of over 800,000. It is something of a tourist destination, due to the nearby set of volcanoes (which due erupt from time to time). The most well known of which is Mt Bromo. The city is also known for its cool climate.

It is a pleasant city, casual, laid back, and friendly. The city is a mix of somewhat ageing colonial (Dutch) era structures, more recent domestic construction, and a small sprinkling of shopping malls.

The Town Hall is located in the city centre, to the west of the Independence Monument. When I visited in January 2014, general admission to the public was not possible.

There is a historical sign, in Indon and English, picture in gallery. A brief history:
1914 Malang became a city.
1920 Contest to design a new city hall.
1929 The Hall was opened for business.
