Ciampino is now the second airport of Rome but it used to be exclusively an air force base. The military still operates from there, and amongst others, there is a SAR (Search And Rescue) squadron based there.
This helicopter is a Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King, perhaps used in SAR operations or perhaps for VIP transport. Apparently there are two of these still in use by the 3º Gruppo (93rd Squadron).
