There are plenty of fireworks displays to celebrate the arrival of a new year but in Algarve the one which takes place in Quarteira is probably the best.

Algarve is a touristy destination and many people, specially from the main Portuguese cities - Lisbon and Porto - as well as Europeans from Northern (therefore colder and definitely more wet) countries come to the region to celebrate the New Years Eve.
Of course, fireworks display are an important part of the commemoration and there are literally dozens of displays. However the one taking place in Quarteira is probably the best (most spectacular and longest) in the region, now that the traditionally number one - in Vilamoura - lost a good part of its strength.
The crowd assembles on the beach and the fireworks starts at midnight. After the display, the music, with an all night long party taking place on the beach and nearby streets.
