Peace Pole in Thorn
On Sunday, September 18, 2011 in the white town of Thorn near Chapel under the Linden a Peace Pole was revealed. A peace pole is a monument which states in several languages ??: May peace prevail on earth . The idea was born after World War II and invented by the Japanese Mahasami Goi. Goi was imbued with the desire for peace and sought ways to inspire people for this. Worldwide He wrote several books and founded in 1955, the World Peace Prayer Society . The members of this organization believe that everyone can contribute to a more peaceful future . Peaceful mind and a positive attitude can help. Placing as many Peace Poles see the WPPS as an incentive and tool. Currently there are about 250,000 copies worldwide . In the Netherlands there are only a few, including at the Peace Palace in The Hague . The Peace Pole in Thorn is the first placed peace pole in Limburg .

Lime trees
In 1982 four large lime trees were severely battered by the age of at least two centuries. They were removed from their old location at the Chapel under the Linden by the diligent work of some parishioners . A stem disc examination of one of these lime trees by the National Institute for Research in forestry and landscaping " Dorschkamp " based on a count of the number of rings performed in duplicate showed that at the time of felling the linden trees were approximately 233 e years old . The research method was and is sufficiently reliable to be able to assume that the particular tree dates from about the year 1750. That means that the big fat lime trees near the chapel were about 264 years old in the year 2013.
On June 8, 1783 , 33 years after the planting of the lime trees , the Laki volcano in Iceland erupted. This eruption lasted eight months , with strangely colored skies as a result. Along by the wind sulfur fumes caused crop failure throughout Western Europe and , together with the subsequent unprecedented harsh winter , caused many thousands of victims . Time studying and counting back from the annual rings in the trunk disk grubbed lime tree Thorn proved the rings from around 1783 to be very dense and compact.
The chapel under the linden
This building looks unusual in comparison with other places of worship from the outside. The windows and doors do not immediately suggest that this is a chapel. That's because the oldest part was built as a Loreto Chapel, a copy of the house of Nazareth that the Italian Loreto built. Clara Elisabeth van Mander Scheidt-Blankenheim, abbes of the Abbey in Thorn, issued in 1673 the order for construction-in Thoorder field, in honor of God and his blessedMother as described in its foundation letters.
