Construction of the Narrows Bridge began in 1957 and was completed and opened to traffic on the 13th of November 1959.

The original bridge was six traffic lanes wide and was intended to carry about 6000 vehicles per hour in each direction but had increased to more than 155,000 in 1998, making it the busiest piece of freeway in the nation. Work started on duplicating the Bridge, in 2001 a duplicate traffic bridge was opened to the west of the original bridge, and in 2005,a railway bridge was constructed in the gap between the two traffic bridges. Passenger trains first traversed the Narrows in 2007 with the opening of the Mandurah railway line.
The briges have pedestrian /cycle paths connecting Perth to South Perth.

At the time of the bridge being opened it was the largest precast, prestressed continuous beam bridge in the world and its centre span of 98m was the longest of its type in the world.

It was the first bridge in Australia to use a segmental construction method and to use external prestressing cables.

In 1999 it received Engineers Australia’s highest accolade, The National Engineering Landmark.

(listed co-ords are for the northeast end of the bridge at the information bay.)
