The Royal Albatross Centre is the only mainland place in the world to view Northern Royal Albatrosses in their natural habitat. The tour includes an expert presentation, and access to the interpretation centre and albatross viewing area.

There is no guarantee that the albatrosses will either be nesting (approximately 60 breeding pairs nest at Taiaroa) or will be in flight. We were lucky enough to see both. Even if the birds don't show there are interesting things to do at the viewing area.

Albatrosses are an incredible species. When they are not breeding they undertake circumpolar flights in the southern oceans, and in particular like the Humboldt Current and the Patagonian Shelf. They prefer to be in grass or herbs, and their nest is a low mound of vegetation, mud, and feathers. A single egg is laid, in October or November, in a nest which takes both parents around 80 days to incubate. The chick is brooded for a month, and is ready to fledge after around 240 days. Their colonies are denser than those of any other great albatross.
