The idea for this zoo came in 1908. With a project designed by Carl Hagenbeck, it was inaugurated in 1911. It was a revolutionary concept because unlike other zoos of the time, the animals had space to freely wander.

In 1935 it was enlarged to its current area (from 12 to 17 ha) with the new bit being designed by the architect Raffaele De Vico. As highlights of these improvements, the reptile house large geodesic shaped aviary, which is still unique in its kind.
