In the woods between Putten, Garderen and Drie – is the Solse Gat, a big hole in the countrysite. Once upon a time there was a huge monastery standing here. It was surrounded by moats and a broad, stately avenue which led to the gate.

However, this was not a good monastery. All the monks had sold their souls to the devil. They led a life of excess and luxury. The monks loved revelling; they drank wine and all night long there were big meals.
It went like that, until a stormy Christmas night. The people from the villages stayed in their houses during that stormy night. They heard one violent thunder. The next morning, a little boy came running to the village to tell the people that the monastery in the woods had totally disappeared, and now there only was a breathtaking deep hole on that place. The earth had opened up to so much evil and then closed over it. The trees around were laying on the ground. All the people from the village wanted to see the wonder. They could only see a little street and a big stately avenue. That was all which had been left from the monastery. The earth had opened and closed herself.

Since that time, in the middle of the night, strange sounds are coming out of the Solse Gat. The clocks from the disappeared monastery start ringing irregular and hoarse, as if they are burst. First they go softly, later on they go louder and more anxious. Then, all the ghosts of the monks come out of the dark and over the big avenue. While they are complaining, they walk in a long, gloomy row. Slowly and bowed they go around the hole, of which a blue glow is coming up. Then they all float restless apart, to start the whole process over again. This goes on until daylight comes, then they go moaning apart in the deepest dark of the gloomy hole.
When the sun is shining it is like nothing has happened . Everything is calm and you would almost doubt, that just before, the ghosts disappeared in the water in the middle of the hole of the Solse Gat.
