«Le Fortin du P’tit Sault consiste en un emplacement stratégique sur un monticule rocheux au sommet duquel se trouve le Fortin du P’tit Sault reconstruit qui domine le confluent du fleuve Saint-Jean et de la rivière Madawaska dans la ville d’Edmundston.

Construit sur ce monticule stratégique en 1841, le lieu historique provincial du Fortin du P’tit Sault était le premier des fortins, aussi nommés forts, érigés sur la ligne de défense britannique pendant la guerre non sanglante de l’Aroostook.

Ce conflit était le résultat de désaccords concernant la frontière entre le Nouveau-Brunswick et l’état du Maine au début des années 1800. La guerre est dite «non sanglante» car il n’y a eu aucun blessé du côté américain ni du côté britannique. Le conflit s’est terminé à la signature du traité Webster-Ashburton en 1842. Le traité a réglé la question frontalière et divisé la population de la région du Madawaska entre le Maine et le Nouveau-Brunswick.

Le fort d’origine a brûlé en 1855.»

Petit-Sault Blockhouse

"The P’tit Sault Blockhouse consists of a strategic site on a rocky hillock, overlooking the confluence of the Saint John and the Madawaska Rivers in the City of Edmundston, crowned by the reconstructed P’tit Sault Blockhouse."

Constructed on this strategic hillock in 1841, the P’tit Sault Blockhouse Provincial Historic Site was one of a number of blockhouses, also referred to as forts, the original blockhouse was built as part of the British line of defence during the bloodless Aroostook War.

This conflict was the result of disputes over the border between the New Brunswick and the State of Maine in the early 1800’s. The war is referred to as ‘bloodless’ because of the lack of casualties on either the British or American sides. It ended with the signing of the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842. The treaty settled the border conflict and divided the population of the Madawaska region between New Brunswick and the State of Maine.
