This plaque is located where the Roman legions built the first hospital in Switzerland.

The military camp of Vindonissa was founded by the Romans in 15 BC. In 14 AD it became the base camp of the 13th Legion and extended with all the facilities suitable for a garrison of the worlds strongest army, including a hospital. In 45 AD the 21st Legion replaced the 13th. They stayed until 69 AD; during their activity the former wood and clay structures were replaced by stone buildings.

One of them was the hospital (valetudinarium) that was excavated and investigated in 1936. It had 60 sickrooms with beds for 300 patients. It was not open to the public, but exclusively for members of the military staff; a legion was about 6000 active soldiers plus many auxiliary crews at this time.

The excavations were then covered again are not accessible for the public, because they are located inside the former monastery of Königsfelden (1308-1528), that is itself a grade A listed cultural heritage site of Switzerland. But the plaque contains a floor plan a drawing of how this building most probably looked like. Next to the plaque there is a reconstruction of a Roman wooden safety fence.

(Please note that the date field does not allow input before 1/1/1000, the correct year should be 14 AD.)
